Motors are often designed for specialty work and many are found in public utility power generation plants. This example may resemble a flying saucer at first look, but in fact is a purpose-built 2500 HP motor designed to drive a low-speed circulating water pump. These motors are part of a permanent installation and can be reconditioned to provide many years of service life.
The large pump shaft and impeller are driven by this 2500 HP motor. This assembly weighs over 10,000 lbs and must be dynamically balanced for smooth operation.
These two components are just a small example of the equipment that supports the generation of electric power.
