Industry utilizes many different forms of electric power producing devices. One of these devices is the Motor Generator set, or commonly known as the MG set.
The basic MG set consists of an AC motor driving a generator. Some units share a common frame with the AC and DC sections enclosed. Others are designed with the combination of a separate drive motor coupled to a generator mounted on a base. When driven by the AC motor, the generator produces Direct Current, which is used to operate specific machinery such as an elevator.
Repairs and refurbishment of an MG set requires knowledge of both AC and DC motors, as well as mechanical abilities to laser align both components on a common base.
