Dedication Behind the City Machine Technologies, Inc. Name

While most of our competitors are investor-owned, CMT is a family-owned and operated business. From age 6, CMT owner, Mike Kovach, knew he wanted to someday run his own company. A lifelong Youngstown resident, he graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering from Youngstown State University and worked in several Fortune 500 machine shops thereafter.

At age 29, Mike decided to venture out on his own and make his dream a reality. He and his late wife, Joan, put a second lien on their house and took every penny out of savings to start up the business. CMT opened on August 9, 1985 in an 8,500 square foot facility with two employees.

Today, the diverse set of offerings and vast CMT campus are proof of Mike’s hard work over the years. He remains deeply involved with the company, heading down to the “trenches” every day. He is dedicated to fulfilling his customers needs by making himself personally accessible to them and stays on top of what’s going on in each division of the business.

To help maintain the family-ownership and operation CMT employees have come to know and appreciate, Mike’s eldest daughter, Claudia Kovach, joined the company in 2006 after her mother passed. In 2015, Chip Kovach followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the family business as an engineer. Chip has a bachelor’s and a master’s in Mechanical Engineering from Youngstown State University, and is CMT’s Vice President of Engineering. However, the CMT family is made up of more than just the Kovachs. More than 50% of our employees have been with us for 10 years or longer. In fact, we have two employees that have been with us for over 25 years! This high retention rate is a testament to our employees and their dedication to our company and our customers.

In addition, CMT is also a UL approved motor shop. We have carried this distinction of being an Underwriters Laboratories certified manufacturing facility since 1985.

Throughout our history, we have experienced continual growth in even the hardest economic times. We have done this through expansion and diversification by reinvesting in ourselves, while our competitors have slowly disappeared or been swallowed up by large conglomerates.
